Creating a minimal CentOS VM using VMWare Fusion on Mac OS X I’ve written before about bootstrapping my development virtual infrastructure. When I did that I used an existing bare image VM I had lying around, but with CentOS 6 around the corner I wanted to document a process for creating a bare image from scratch.

Vt-d, which is required for thunderbolt to even work at all, is absolutely supported by Mac OS X, and has been for some time. Since 10.8, I believe? So why do none of these virtualization solutions like VMWare Fusion or Parallels take advantage of it to allow for PCIe / thunderbolt passthrough to VMs? Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or higher Supported Guest Operating Systems VMware Fusion supports over 60 guest operating systems, including Windows 3.1 through Windows Vista, Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD. The operating systems listed here have been tested in VMware Fusion. OS 9 is only for the PowerPC. Emulation software allows you to run a guest of a different architecture than the host, but virtualization software (which is what Fusion is) requires that the guest architecture be the same as the host (for speed reasons; the guest runs directly most of the time).
