Yep, the USB ports on a Mac don't supply power when the Mac is sleeping; however, the FireWire ports do.

Another option would be to have the computer 'wake from sleep' for an hour or two (not sure how long charging takes) and then sleep itself again. You can do this vis System Preferences --> Energy Saver --> Schedule...

Dan - I haven't tested this on Intel Macs but PPC based Macs do NOT supply power to the FireWire ports when the computer is asleep. This became an issue when Apple shipped generation 3 iPods. Gen 1 and 2 iPods used standard FW cables but with the switch to the proprietary port, when the computer went to sleep the iPod power drained - USB or FW port.

My PowerBook G4 would charge my iPod while asleep. That was a PowerPC computer and a 3G iPod. The caveat, and a fairly obvious one, was that the computer had to be plugged in to provide the power; if you were running on battery power, no iPod charging while asleep. Otherwise, when plugged in, the iPod would charge just fine over FireWire.

I think kirkmc was asking was not a confirmation of the hint issue, but rather could you just plug your USB cable into an external powered USB hub and it would still be charged when the Mac was asleep. If so, your iPhone would still sync and interact with the Mac as if it was plugged in directly, and also charge when asleep without having to buy an additional cable.

I originally tried plugging the iPhone USB cable into a powered USB hub, and it looks like the hub stops supplying power when the computer it's connected to shuts down or sleeps. Apparently you can modify a USB hub to supply power even when the computer is off or sleeping though.

No - my 5G iPod will not charge when hooked only to a (powered) USB hub.

I can confirm that just using a powered USB hub is not enough to get your iPhone to charge when your computer is asleep. I bought a powered hub to do exactly this with my iMac and was very surprised when it didn't work.

The Firewire/USB -combo-cable is essential when using any of the bigger iPods or iPhone as mere USB doesn't provide enough power to charge the unit AND transfer songs. If you connect the device to a computer when it's low on battery and immediately start loading it full of songs the unit might shutdown during the process. This shutdown can be 'fatal' to the device.

My 800mhz G4 iBook and my Core Duo Macbook doesn't cut power to the USB ports when the computer is sleeping. Only when fully shut down.
I'm surprised the MacMini does!

I recently bought a Targus 7 port USB powered hub that has 2 ports that stay powered regardless of computer condition (On, Sleep, Off) and can be used to charge or run any USB device.
Check the USB hub for this feature. It is exceptional not standard for most USB hubs.

The Targus hub with the 'always on' ports do not charge an iPhone by itself.
I have an older PowerBook G4 1GHZ that turns off power to the USB ports when sleeping and wanted to charge my iPhone at night, but found out even though the Targus hub has ports that continuously supply power, the iPhone won't charge. Either the power level isn't high enough or the iPhone is expecting something 'intelligent' on the opposite end of the dock connector.

Now I am very confused, again!
On the surface this seems like a great hint but after watching a thread on the Apple forum about charging your iPhone with an iPod charger I started checking my chargers.
The iPhone charger puts out 5 Volts. Makes sense since that is what is on a USB bus.
But an early iPod Firewire charger I have here puts out 12 Volts. This would seem to indicate to me that the FW port has 12 V on it. If so, then using FW to charge a 5V device wouldn't be a great idea.

The USB ports on my 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro do provide power when sleeping. I charge my Treo 650 every night that way.

Firewire ports can supply voltages from 8V up to 30V, it's in their specifications. This is not a problem, as the device that uses the port has a voltagfe regulator on board. The iPod Dock Connector will send the correct voltage to the USB ports.
Recent Macs (at least form PMac G5 and later) supply power to FireWire ports also when turned off (not only when sleeping). It alarmed me when I saw for the first time the firewire external drive still on when Mac was off, but I discovered it is a new (odd) feature.
Many self powered USB hubs supply power also when host computer is off; not all of them, but most.

This article is from 2003, when iPods still used Firewire for Data transfers. It's not valid anymore. Since the firewire port is used only for power in the ipods the computer effectively becomes a charger in that situation.
